I used to hide the fact that I shopped at Goodwill for clothes, but not anymore. It's a smorgasbord of great style, exceptional prices, and huge selection - who could ask for more? I've loaded up on Old Navy, Abercrombie and Fitch, and awesome Levi's just to name a few of the name brands they carry. I've even scored some with the tags still on for $5-7! While it does take a bit more effort to find the perfect clothes, it can be done with a little patience and planning, and it's worth it.
Tip#1: Don't go when you're pressed for time. In my city, Goodwill categorizes their clothes by size (S, M, L, etc.) and then by color. I look beyond my usual size because I once bought a great shirt with "XL" on the tag, but it sure looked like it belonged in SMALL! Somebody really shrunk the poor thing! So give yourself plenty of time to scan through the racks.
Tip#2: Learn the specials. There's more than one! Every week, our local Goodwills offer 50% off a particular colored price tag; but there are other great discounts, too, depending on the day.
Tip#3: Don't go with your young children if you're looking for clothes for yourself. I've learned you need to focus as you toggle through the racks, which you can't do with your toddler running around your legs and disappearing down the aisles. It results in a very stressful experience and a vow never to go to the Goodwill again. Don't do that to yourself!
Tip #4: Look closely before you buy. Since most of Goodwill's clothes are previously-owned, you want to be aware of any missing buttons, snags, holes, or stains. If it's a flaw you believe you can fix, however, consider buying. They may offer an additional discount off the item.
Tip #5: Be confident about the fit. If you're not sure, try it on first. One downfall about Goodwill is their short-lived return policy. In our town, you have only 7 days to return an item AND the tag must still be on! I've lost out because I didn't try it on first, realized later it didn't fit, but wasn't able to get back within the 7 days. I tried bringing it back day 8, but found out how strict they are with their policy. Poor me.
Tip #6: Don't be shy. The stereotyped crowd you imagined to shop at Goodwill is no more. More and more people from every income level have learned the value in what they have to offer.
I have been pleased with Goodwill for their friendly and helpful staff, and respect them for the opportunities they provide the disabled, and others who otherwise face challenges finding employment. Overall, I consider shopping at Goodwill to be a satisfying and worthwhile experience, and encourage you to give it a try. You can spend the same money you'd spend in department stores and walk out with 10 times the clothes. Tell me that wouldn't make your day.
