Are gifted and talented programs elitist?

As a parent of a child in a gifted program I have the unfortunate position of having to defend my decision to let him participate in the program. I have found that far too many people rush to judgment on this subject. I encounter all sorts of myths and misconceptions about what these programs are trying to achieve. I can only use my own experience with my children's school to educate those I meet with negative views.

Before entering the program my son had a lot of trouble in class. He often finished his work well ahead of the other kids leading him to become bored and disruptive. His grades were less than they should be due to lack of interest. The extra time in the program has given him focus. He now looks forward to class showing great enthusiasm toward every new project.

There is however a attitude of being better than the other students. This is where the parents should be careful to ensure their children do not subscribe to this stereotype. I have yet to meet a teacher who perpetuates this notion. I believe it comes mostly from the parents of students who are uninformed as what the actual goal of these programs is.

These programs serve a needed purpose and should not be viewed any different than the programs provided for the students who require extra help. both programs have the same end result in mind. To help those that need help in attaining the best education possible.
