This is the saddest point of the over-politicization of American politics. Some people are so afraid that they will lose ground on specific issues, they will question the integrity and attempt to change the most consistent and balanced part of our federal government.
Ten years ago the Right worried that the legal slide to the left would never end, that we would end up with legalized inter-species marriage and a political muzzle on Christians. And they contemplated changing our judicial system.
Now the Left worries that their gains on abortion, gay rights and other issues will be repealed, and they consider changing our judicial system.
But consider this: every Justice swears an oath to be impartial, to mete justice blindly, and be aware of and take into consideration their own positions on issues. They swear, in essence, to NOT be an activist, and by and large they keep their promise. 11 of the past 13 justices were appointed by a Republican president, yet abortion still remains legal, and gays have no specific laws limiting their civil rights. The trust has not been broken.
Pity those who would assail our last unscandaled and pure branch of government for a political win.
