The word friend in Greek is "phileos" and "philogos" which means "someone to talk to.
I have just recently found a classmate I went to prom with. He was a junior. I don't know how he felt about me,other than being the awkward girl I perceived myself to be back then. All I know was that I was anxious beyond words when I asked him to take me to my prom. Now,let me explain, that in itself took a lot of nerve because I was extremely shy and introverted when I was in school. I was brought up in a home where the males ruled and if you were female, you were subservient to the males. Hence, my terribly low self esteem BACK THEN !So when he accepted my invitation I was ecstatic.
So here we are twenty years later and I decided to look some people I used to know on Classmates.com. Well, My searches were fruitless for a while. That is until a couple of days ago when I received an email from my prom date. I couldn't believe it. I am glad to know that he is doing well.Of all the people I had looked up and he is the only one I've been able to locate. How amazing! So to make sure I sent him the yearbook picture from that "extravagant " night. When he confirmed it was he indeed, I was taken back to that blink in time. What stands out in my mind about my friend is that he behaved like a perfect gentleman and I felt like a lady by his side.
These days it seems harder to find people with whom you can connect. I think that too often we don't give people, especially from our past a chance to get to know the person we've become. The best thing to do is to keep an open mind and accept each other without any false expectations. Then maybe, just maybe, the friendship can grow and mature and become a valued treasure. We waste too much time worrying and not enough time giving love and being the recipients of love. Friends, the true ones, are those with whom you can converse openly and candidly about our past, present and our future.
