Being a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, and former Assistant Manager of a General Nutrition Center, I have heard it all too many times when pitching a multivitamin/mineral supplement, "I don't need that, I eat very healthy!" It makes me cringe every time I hear this because as a professional, I know that statement could not be further from the truth. In actuality, it is near impossible to obtain all of the vitamins and minerals one needs via diet alone. This is where a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement can come in very handy.
In fact, due to unhealthy diet, many people wind up suffering from one or more of the following chronic health problems: obesity, cancer, irregular heart beat, heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, osteoporosis, and even addiction. That's right, addiction. In the extremely unconventional documentary by film maker Morgan Spurlock, Supersize Me, in which Morgan embarks on a 30-day McDonalds binge, eating nothing but McDonalds for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Morgan begins to notice just after a few days of the project, that when he doesn't have his McDonald's "fix," he actually feels depressed, no matter how well the day is going for him.
Also in the movie, Morgan has a nutritionist as one of his professionals who examines him before his journey, and throughout his journey, to see his "progress." She actually recommends that he take a multivitamin (more evidence of the supplement's health benefits) to make up for the significant deficiency of vitamins and minerals in his diet. Unfortunately however, Morgan had to decline due to the fact that since McDonalds does not sell multivitamins, he would be breaking the rules by taking one and would therefore defeat the purpose of his documentary. Upon continuing his project, Morgan gained over 15 pounds of fat, became a victim of depression, and his cholesterol levels shot up while his liver health was in turmoil.
Is this to say that if Morgan were to have taken a multivitamin, that none of these effects would have happened? No. However, it is to say that if he were to have taken a multivitamin daily throughout his 30-day McDonalds escapade, that the negative effects on his health would have been drastically reduced. And besides the negative health effects of an unhealthy diet, what about the negative health effects from environmental toxins. Can a multivitamin help in that department? Absolutely! Here's how
