Over burdened budgets and continuously rising taxes should be a clear signal that the US government is already overextended and should not help fund election campaigns. This combined with the constant call for campaign finance reforms speak volumes about the difficulties regulating campaign finance. To actually question whether or not government should finance election campaigns should be a clear and resounding "No!"
Want to hear about local and national governmental budget problems? Just turn on any television or radio and listen to the news. Economy slow downs weigh on banks and mortgage companies usually insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The defense budget is over burdened and requires near constant expanding, money taken from other social programs and increased taxes. Fortune 500 companies send American jobs to China, Ireland, Spain, and countries that will deliver the products for less cost to the company causing higher unemployment rates. Just recently the state of Michigan faced a governmental shutdown because the budget could not be balanced.
Think about the candidates you support. Would you want the government to hand funds over to their opponents? For government campaign election funding to be fair every candidate would have to receive the same amount of funding regardless of their party affiliation. These are your tax dollars how many more would you like to spend? How would it be funded? Should state or federal taxes pay for it? Would it be fair for one to pay and not the other?
Which campaigns would be funded? It would not be fair to only fund national campaigns. If state campaigns are included it would not be fair to exclude local campaigns. The potential for costs to skyrocket out of control with the issue of governmental campaign election finance are exponential. The system for campaign finance that is in place clearly has flaws. To replace it with governmental funding would be like having a hungry fox to protect your hen house while you pay for the losses.
