As a parent of a 5 year old little boy who has just started kindergarten, I would have to say that the best extracurricular activity is Karate. I recently signed him up for an introductory class and he absolutely loves it. It gives him a chance to interact with other kids his age and learn some valuable skills at the same time. He has learned respect and boundaries as well as team work and dedication. In this world where there are so many children being abducted by people right in front of our homes sometimes, it is never too soon to teach our children how to defend themselves in these situations. There are a lot of parents who feel that Karate only promotes violence. This is simply not the case. Yes it can be aggressive but wouldn't you want your child to be "aggressive" against an attacker who wants to harm them? Besides that it simply is fun! I love to watch him learn something new and be excited about it. Happy that he has done something that he never thought he could. Karate is wonderful for kids who have trouble focusing or coming out of their shell. It teaches them to "have a voice" and not be afraid to use it. It also offers them a chance to be apart of competitions and earn trophies for their accomplishments. I have also noticed that my son is more eager to help me around the house. He wants responsibility now. He wants to feel like he is apart of our team at home. I don't think he would have thought about that on his own without the help from Karate. So to any parent who is wondering what activity they should let their kids participate in, I would have to give it to Karate. Hands down.
