Short stories: Walking out on your spouse

Texts. Texts. Oh God Texts!
I wish now I had never read them. I know it's my fault; I should never have read her texts. It's a bit like reading someone else's dairy or e-mails: both occupying the same category of personal messages and private lives; but I did, and now I wish I had never started. In my defense all I can say is that if you want something kept secret then you shouldn't leave evidence lying around for someone like me to explore; not much of a defense but there it is. I was never one for not to pry, especially if it's someone you truly love.

I remember it all too well. Well, at least the start, that is to say I don't remember the end too well, but I knew back then that something wasn't quite right when the night had ended. I think I would have been a lot more alert if I hadn't consumed more than my fair share of alcohol, then I probably would have seen it earlier; thats easy to say now. However, I still feel justified in drinking as much as I did being it was my 27th birthday and we were both out with the usual crowd of mutually supporting, self important group of peers that only money and education lends a hand in obtaining. I felt they always knew and were privately laughing behind my back. Bastards, but what did I expect: lie down with dogs and all that. I don't suppose I would have been much different given a slight change of circumstances: it not being me on the receiving end.

The drinking had started earlier from the accounts office, which was a good thing as it helped me block out the texts I had read. I think David, the manager, knew that the afternoon was a "right off", but being as it was my birthday and it had fallen on a Friday, and what with the build up had having been planned, it was considered acceptable; plus David and Maria were invited to the later celebrations, so there was a vested interest. Adrian was there as well - not bad considering he had only been with the firm two months, but he was bringing Julia; which completed the sextet nicely.

The guys hit the La Plancha at lunch time and I don't consider that there was any intention of returning to the office once the spirits had started to flow; David was with us so it was really up to him to say if we had to, which he didn't after the fourth shot of tequila: I could see which way this day was heading and started to relax. I think the only reason that we sometimes came here on Fridays after work was the Spanish name, and nothing to do with location or convenience;
