from the tree at the end of the hike (very tasty). If you enjoy waterfalls, but would like to cool off before doing the second half of your hike, visit Maunawili Falls. The mile-and-a-half hike crosses the stream in several parts and can be quite muddy, so don't wear your favorite shoes! The water at the end is chilly and refreshing. Feeling spontaneous? Climb up the ledge for a 45 foot drop into the reservoir. If you ate too much at Germaine's Luau and feel like getting a workout the next day, skip the gym and try the 1200+ steps of Koko Head in Hawaii Kai. Warning: this is the ULTIMATE stair-stepper (but with better views)! When you are done, skip on over to Hanauma Bay for the best snorkeling on the island ($5 entrance fee). You won't believe the colors of these fish until you see them (if you're lucky you may even spot a sea turtle)!
Vacations aren't complete without souvenir shopping. With an ABC store on every corner, you have a convenience store and souvenirs in one stop. If you're looking for t-shirts, however, I'd go to the International Marketplace (most places have 8 for $20). It's also home to several jewelry kiosks, Hawaii-made soaps and candles and practically everything else bearing "Hawaii" on it. If you're browsing surf shops for gifts, check out Honolua Surf Company on Kalakaua Ave (only found in Hawaii). If you can make it to Wal-Mart (Ke'eaumoku Street near Ala Moana Shopping Center), you can find cheap island gear there, too (don't forget to grab Kona Coffee)!
Lastly, when booking accommodations, don't forget to check Craigslist.com. Often times, you can find cheap vacations rentals right in the heart of Waikiki (or elsewhere if you prefer). If you have family or friends on Oahu, they can often times get Kama'aina (local) discount at major hotels.
Enjoy your stay on this beautiful island! Aloha!
