Oahu, Hawaii: Attractions and activities

Oh, paradise. Whether you're on a family vacation, honeymoon, spring break or business, the island of Oahu has something for everyone.
Of course, when people think of Hawaii sandy beaches seem to consume the brain. And that's OK because the island boasts famous beaches like Waikiki Beach and Pipeline to less known beaches like "Sandy's" and Lani Kai. While visitors should step foot on the well-known south shore beach of Waikiki for the novelty, I recommend renting a car or taking the bus to the sands of Lani Kai in Kailua (if you are into windsurfing or kite boarding, this is also the area for you). While in Kailua, check out Buzz's Restaurant or Pinky's for lunch (you may even spot a character from LOST hanging out at these spots).

Sand Beach (better known as Sandy's), which is located on the east side of the island, is a great place to barbecue, sunbath and body board (bus number 22 from Waikiki will get you here in 30-45 minutes). If driving, make sure to stop at the lookout points along the way!
If you're an avid surfer or follow the sport, then the North Shore is the place to be between the months of November and January as that side is known for its winter swells and world championship surf competitions. Most competitions are held at Pipeline, but if you aren't there for the surf, I suggest Waimea Bay. You can count on your own space, great turquoise water and fantastic views. There is even rocks to jump off if you are feeling adventurous (ranging from 15-25 feet).
While at the North Shore, many people enjoy the unique shops and infamous Shave Ice in Haleiwa (also where Jack Johnson grew up). Cholo's Mexican Restaurant, Spaghettini (NY pizza and Italian food), and Banzai Sushi Bar are delicious and inexpensive ways to satisfy your hunger. You'll also see several Blue Water Shrimp "buses" scattered about, serving local harvested shrimp, ahi (tuna), crab and various other seafood. All lunch plates are between $10-$12.
Other places to eat around the island include: Seaside Grill in Waikiki ($2.99 gets you pancakes, 2 eggs and bacon or sausage they even serve breakfast until noon); if local food is what you crave, check out Lulu's at the end of Waikiki (Coconut Shrimp and Sashimi are highly recommended); the Yard House (Lewers Street Waikiki) carries over 100 beers on tap and serves local dishes as well as typical chain foods (burgers and BBQ chicken salad are my favorites).
Aside from local food, visitors like to become immersed in Hawaiian culture in other ways,
