There's nothing wrong with classic games, but games have grown up over the years, and there's a lot of new ones out there that are great for kids. Please forgive me in advance as there are card and board games that are good for kids.
San Juan - This is actually a card game, but it's based on a board game (Puerto Rico). It's reffered to as the beginers version of Puerto Rico.
In this one, you need to build x amount of buildings to win the game. You pay for buildings with cards you get for producing products. The 5 options you have from the larger game are there, but it's all done with cards. 8 and up can handle this one.
Greedquest - The object is to not only get into the dungen to get the gold, but to also get back out. Each room on the board has its own rules, on top of the rules of the cards. You have to plan really well for this one. Again, 8+ can handle this.
NinjaBurger card game - You are a ninja working for a fast food joint. Your task is to deliver the hot and tasty food, while it is still hot and tast, to your customer, but you must do so without being seen or heard. This is done with dice rolls. If you succeed, then you shall gain honer. Gain enough and you will win the game. If you fail, however, you shall lose honor. 8+ again.
Dork Tower board game - Don't let the title full you. This is an exact replica of 1980's Dark Tower board game, only without the electronics, which have been replaced with dice rolls. The board is exactly the same. You move the tower at the end of each turn to determine where day and night is. Every aspect of the game is the same. For encounters, you pick tiles to see what you run into. The characters are based on the Dork Tower comic strip. 10+ for this one, although I've demoed it to kids as young as 6, and they picked it up with no problem.
X-Bugs - It's basically tiddlywinks, although this time the pieces belong to armies, with each piece doing its own job. It's no longer enough to simply cover an enemy piece, now you have to hit the right pieces at the right time. Lots of strategy. Warning, though, as there are a lot of small pieces, so don't let the younger kids play this alone.
Zooloretto - You're a farmer and your farm is split into sections. You can hold one type of animal in each section. You place the tiles (which can be animals, money, or equipment) on carts (which hold 3 tiles). When you feel it's worth it, you take one cart (it's the only one you'll get for that turn, so choose wisely).
The object is to fill
