As someone who was taught the game of golf by his father, I know firsthand the common mistakes that parents make when golfing with their children. The game of golf can be something that draws a child and parent closer together or it can make a course the battle grounds between the two. The secret of not having Armageddon on the back nine is a little something called balance. This is especially true if the parent is a more experienced golfer and the child could just be starting out. I know in my case, my dad wanted so bad to see me succeed at the game, he would often throw in unwanted tips. Things like, "You are aiming to far left", or "Don't forget to play your slice" became common place in our golf outings together and often made me so frustrated that I couldn't play at all. Now don't get me wrong, a child needs to be shown the right way to do things, and needs to know the fundamentals of golf, but not at the expense of an on-course argument arising. Today, my dad and I often spend a relaxing morning on the course together without even a cross word escaping either one of our mouths. This came about because we decided that no help would be offered unless it was asked for first. We came to find out that I really did want my dad's advice on the game, and often his advice on life while playing the game. So to sum up the most common mistakes when golfing with your kids, do not try to over correct what they are doing, and only give welcome advice.
