I am definitely agreeable in not allowing minors to use tanning beds. As argued on other articles, a precedence has been set by the death of a very young lady, following her exposures to tanning salons. It's bad enough we run the risk of contracting skin cancers by natural means, let alone putting our children at risk by giving them access to these artificial and unregulated processes.
Letting our kids to use tanning beds is the same as allowing them to use other life threatening substances. Do we encourage our kids to take drugs ? Do we encourage them to smoke, or take drugs, or drink ? I say the majority of responsible parents would answer NO to these questions ! And, as we are concerned for our children's welfare, it goes without saying, that we wouldn't encourage them to place their health in jeopardy by allowing them to use tanning beds either.
What's wrong with using good old common sense, and if our kids want a good looking tan, then let do so by natural and supervised means, following the guidelines of common sense. Also, it's bad enough that our kids are easily influenced by the media and their peers, about how they look, should we then encourage them to feel that they don't measure up, and are unattractive, thereby lowering their self esteem even further ?
As long as minors receive the correct amount of Vitamin D to keep them healthy, and we don't deflate their self esteem, and encourage them to grow up as healthy and an valuable individuals who are worth something, then we know that we're doing our job.
