Consequences of lying on your life insurance application

Lying on your life insurance application can not only backfire on you; but more importantly, it can affect your grieving family when you die. How do I know? My family experienced the consequences when my sister died several years ago.
My sister had many problems in her life. Once she called me in despair. She was upset about how she was always picked on because of her physical conditions. She was tired and unhappy. Her problems included a physical handicap, speech impediment, and epileptic seizures. She expressed that she had been miserable since childhood. Consequently she was ashamed of her conditions and chose to conceal those things that were not obvious to others.

Nine years ago, she died unexpectedly during the night at the age of 49. The official cause of her death was complications as a result of epileptic seizures. We were shocked and heartbroken at her sudden death; however, we were not surprised at the cause since she had suffered this malady since childhood.
Another older sister began to handle the funeral arrangements. She found out that my deceased sister had taken out a life insurance policy for $10,000. She presented this to the funeral home. To our dismay, the insurance company denied the claim. Why? The agent informed my sister that my deceased sister had failed to disclose the fact that she had a history of epileptic seizures on her application. Therefore, they would not pay on policy.
Lying on your life insurance policy? Think again. You are not the only one affected, your family suffers too. Funerals are expensive enough with a good life insurance policy. It is even more detrimental when that policy does not pay off and your family is left holding the bag.
