Considerations for high school students working after school

If you are in high school and considering getting a job or you have a job there are some things you should be aware of. First of all try not to work too many hours. Doing so will make you tired and lethargic and you won't be attentive in school and your grades could begin to suffer. This is something you definitely don't want to happen.

Try to work in an area that has a low crime rate especially if you will be traveling at night to come home. Sometimes criminal activity can take place in neighborhoods that are less than stellar and teenagers should not have to encounter individuals who routinely practice these things for a livelihood. If at all possible see if your parents or another responsible adult can give you a ride preferably to and from work, but at the very least from work, when it is likely to be darker outside.

Now is the time to start saving your money. This activity will soon become a habit and follow you throughout your adult life. It is best to save your money starting at an early age and watch the power of compound interest go to work for you. You can accumulate quite a nest egg by the time you retire. Perhaps you are planning on going to college and the money you save can go towards some of the things you will need such books, clothing, tuition, supplies, and other miscellaneous things you will need to survive on a college campus.

Working after school is more than making money. This represents an opportunity to take on leadership roles. Practice being a leadership by being excellent at what you do. Lead by example. Become a person that others what to follow and look up to. Ask for more responsibility and more tasks and duties. This will put you in the spot light and you just never know who will notice your skills, abilities, and talents. You are positioning yourself for a great future by creating good habits right now.

Take the time to at your job to study the success habits of your boss and ask him/her what are some of the qualities needed to be successful.

If you are going to be working later than you normal schedule take the time to inform your parents of the situation so there will be no miscommunications.

When leaving work be very aware of your surroundings. Exercise care and caution with everything while at work and in route and this will help you to become more aware of your surroundings and any suspicious characters.
