I believe the military, as a whole, is undersized for the current conflicts we are involved in. Some of the soldiers are on their third or fourth tours of duty in Iraq. I know nothing about Afghanistan, but I'm sure it's the same there. As I see it, one of the major problems is that the AMERICAN public is not overly concerned about the threat from terrorist and therefore does not see this as a serious issue.
The people who are truly bearing the brunt of the war are the soldiers and their families. Most of these soldiers are vastly underpaid, grossly underinsured in case of death or disabling injuries and mostly unappreciated by our "honorable" politicians. As soon as this war is over, the politicians will again begin to cut the funding for the VA hospitals and medical treatment for the injured veterans. Yet if you will but look at their own benefits, you will see that they give themselves the best of everything.
The families of the people killed in the terrorist attack of 9/11 have received over a million dollars each. Their loved ones just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Our soldiers get a death benefit of about $6000.00, plus a burial expense of about $1700.00. The wife will recieve about $833.00 a month until she remarries. There is also a monthly payment for each child until the child reaches eighteen years of age. There may be other payments, but the point is; WHY? Why did the government pay the families of the victims of 9/11 so much and gives the soldiers families so little?
We, the people, need to wake up. If we are going to fight a war, let us win it. Give our soldiers EVERYTHING they need. Do not tie our hands with political issues. Politicians do not fight wars, they start them.
The only thing a terrorist understands is brute force. We need a larger military force to deal with the strain which the politicians have placed upon them. Increase the size of our military and stop whining about the prisoners at Gitmo. REMEMBER, these are the same people that are cutting the heads off unarmed prisoners and murdering innocent civilians. If you must weep for a fighter, weep for AMERICAN soldiers, not cowardly terrorist.
