The fact that school districts would even consider banning peanut products is an outrageous idea to me.
First, and foremost, it is unfortunate that any of us must suffer from allergies that make our lives more complex than they already are when we are children. But, just like any allergy or medical problem it is up to the parents to begin teaching the children their medical needs. The parents need to make sure that those the children is around are also aware, such as teachers, principles, baby-sitters, etc. Asthmatics carry inhalers, those allergic to bees carry their EpiPens, as should those allergic to items containing peanuts.
Secondly, another medical aspect to consider. Children who have low sugar or who need quick protein boosts throughout the day often count on peanut items for their quick snacks. Peanut-butter is still how I help my body adjust when I'm feeling faint. Who are any of us to put one child's health over that of another.
Finally, look at it from an economic stand point. Many lower-income family children receive their food for lunches and snacks through some form of government assistance as in WIC or food-stamps. Food stamp users usually try to buy the most for their money, as do most of us. Peanut-butter, probably the largest food for concern with children with a peanut allergy, is inexpensive and healthy. The WIC program actually contains peanut-butter as one of its choice foods for parents to buy. Why should these children not have the opportunity to eat healthy food from home?
The problem with this issue is that parents are not continuously vigilant about teaching their children. It so often falls into the hands of others that even when a situation is life threatening parents would rather take the easy route at everyone else's inconvenience. All parents should teach all their children about ANY allergy they have; after all, we can't go around banning bees from existence.
