My how things have changed over the years! When I was having my babies, the daddies didn't come to the baby showers. In fact it was all but forbidden. The man would drop the mother off at the site of the shower. He would then go play golf or whatever it is that men do when they aren't with their wives. Hours later you would call your husband to come back and pick you up and bundle all the new baby stuff into the car. Today is a different story. The daddy's are joining in on the fun of the baby shower. Men aren't finding this such a taboo activity in todays world.
In the past couple of years, I have been very fortunate. I now have two grandchildren. During that time, there were three baby showers. At the shower for the first grand-baby, my daughter didn't show up at all. She had the baby the day before the shower. However, the daddy was there. For the second grand-baby, there were two showers. Daddy went to both showers. Now, there are three grandchildren and the daddy was at this shower also. My how times have changed.
It is so nice to see the men involved so much today with everything to do with having the new baby. After all, it's not just moms baby. Daddy's are going to share in all the crying in the middle of the night. They will be feeding and changing baby. Why can't he join in on the celebration for the baby's arrival. It all makes perfect sense.
The dads had just as much fun at the showers as the mothers did. They got to open the present along with mommy and comment on some of the cute little clothes. They were involved in conversations about all things baby. All those tips that the mother alone would hear years ago, now the men are allowed in on the great secrets of good parenting.
It used to be a taboo thing because it wasn't considered macho stuff. Now I think that men would actually get looked down on if they didn't show up. Kudos to our new fathers of this day and age. Men are no longer put on the back burner when it comes to the baby being raised. His thougts and opinions are being considered more now than they ever have before. Take pride in the fact that you can be so involved with your family.
There are some men that would still say that they don't want to go to the baby shower. There is some sense in that, but not much. Daddy's add a flair to the shower that wasn't there in previous years. They can answer questions that men from eras gone by couldn't even begin to answer.
In closing, the men who are man enough bring something unique to the baby shower. They bring it more alive than a baby shower has ever been before. It brings on a whole new twist to a very old tradition. Men like to eat, there is eating at the shower. Men like to play games, there are games at the shower. Men like to show off how smart they are, there is plenty of that at a shower. Men are more involved with their families then ever before. This is just one small step towards that goal. Men of today, you rock.
