Is it Second Life or World of Warcraft? An RPG (role playing game) is a major commitment. Modern RPGs are continuous games, broadband connection, and life goes on around you whether you are logged in or not. Anarchy Online is my personal favorite, and you have to play hours and hours.
The right RPG will find you. It depends on what you like. "WoW" for medieval stuff, spells, and wizards, "AO" for sci-fi themed gameplay, "SL" for reality RPG. The choices abound, and it depends on what you are into.
Warning:
All good online rpgs cost monthly, or have a subscription fee. You have to pay whether you play or not. Pick something you know you will play alot, sign-up and pay the membership fee, and enjoy. Yes, you can play offline if you like, but modern games are designed to be played over the internet, all the yummy graphics pumped over the web, and individuals with skills sometimes better than your own helping you out, or maybe you helping someone else out. It's addictive.
The whole philosophy behind RPGs is that you log in, play for a while, log out, live reality, sleep, eat, etc, and log back in, your character still intact, and play some more. Most of us play in the evening, logout at bedtime, go to school or work, log back in afterwards, and play more. Since RPGs are world wide, there is always something going on in these "virtual worlds". It's simply a matter of picking what you like.
