Take the MRT to Newton, then take SMRT Bus 171
Singapore is only one of two cities in the world to have a significant area of primary rainforest within its boundaries the other being Rio de Janeiro. Only 12 kilometres from the city, this reserve contains more species of trees than the entire North American continent.
If you don't mind spending some money, Sentosa charges $3.00 per adult. There are a few beaches there, not spectacular, but a good place to relax. Remember to go to the beaches after 5pm. Before that the sun is very very hot. Take the MRT to Harbourfront, then change to Sentonsa Express train.
The other famous attractions like Zoo, Night Safari, Jurong Bird Park are not really worth the money.
*SHOPPING*
Nothing is really worth buying in Singapore. The only thing I can recommend is the Pandan Chiffon cake from Bengawan Solo, there is a shop at Changi Airport. Each cake cost less than $10, very soft and light, with a very interesting sweet smell. You would not find it anywhere else in the world.
