Risky Child Behaviors

Monitoring your child's computer time

Safety is one of the biggest concerns parents have, and it is important that we become aware of all the dangers our children can be experiencing. When your child is using a computer, they can be at serious risk if the proper steps are not being taken to ensure the safety, and security of their online use.

Although children seem to be aware, more now than ever of the dangers online, there are still many things, that seem harmless to all children that can put them in danger. As a parent, it is crucial that we become aware of these serious risks, so we can protect our children. Here are some tips and suggestions for monitoring your children on the computer.

DO YOUR RESEARCH
There are many computer programs for parents or adults with children in their home to use for monitoring computer activity. Most of these programs will help keep your children safe, and provide you detailed information on the sites and programs your child uses. Some of these programs can even track every word they type so you can ensure that no personal information has been entered. It is important, with programs like this, that you remember to respect your child's privacy. If read all of your child's conversations, it is important to maintain the trust you have built with your child, or they might rebel and use the internet else where for private and personal discussions, which can leave them even more vulnerable.

You will also want to do some research online and read different risks and safety concerns that you may not be aware of. You can also suggest your child does this research with you, that way you will both be learning about it together. Explain to your child that you are only concerned for their safety.

CHOOSE AN APPROPRIATE PLACE FOR THE COMPUTER
If you have a computer at home, you will want to place it in a common family friendly room. I would suggest placing the computer in a living room where other people are often present. This will usually prevent your child from visiting sites which are inappropriate, or dangerous.

BUILD A STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNICATION
Knowing how your child is using the computer, will come partly from trust in your child. It is essential that you communicate with your child about the computer and the internet, and explain all the risks and dangers. Ask them which programs they use, and how they choose to socialize on the computer. You may also want to tell or remind them that location and other personal information on instant messenger programs, email addresses, along with forums (public discussion boards online), websites, and other such things are available to everyone who can access the internet.
