Adventure Travel Honduras - Tale of Horror
Jungle Cures for the Desperate:Tincture of Dragon's Blood Flower

Roatan Honduras is the place to scuba dive for "big" animals. The reputation for shark, dolphin and large fish is unequaled in this hemisphere. I had no idea that I would be endangering my very life just going on vacation. Being avid, well-traveled Caribbean divers, excitement ran high as the departure date arrived. My husband Jim and I live in Minnesota. Jokingly, I tell people that, "I'm allergic to Honduras." It was no joke at the time. The possibility of death is very sobering. This is my vacation horror story.

The trip started with a warning omen. Why don't I listen to my intuition? When will I learn to stop plowing through life as an ultra busy American? We set two alarms for the 7am flight, and slept through both... totally missed the plane. Result, 14 hour delay. In retrospect that icky feeling in my stomach should ALWAYS be obeyed. Just for good measure, our luggage stayed on the mainland. Taking 24 hours of uncertainty to arrive in Roatan on the next tiny 20 seater puddle jumper plane.

A taxi brought us in the pitch dark to our resort. A giant sink hole appeared in the road. A VW bug would fit entirely within. At night, with no warning signs, it was a dangerous spot. The taxi driver just flashed his lights at the traffic. I guess that means "don't mess with me" and we played chicken with oncoming cars. He informed us this area had no Walmart, normally a good thing, but other than the tiny resort gift shop, there was absolutely NO shopping. That means, who knows when I will get my next pair of clean underwear? Lucky me, I packed my swim suit in my carry on. We met Mark and Kathy the next morning for a snorkel. But, I am getting ahead of myself.

Kathy is the only woman I know who actually went to "finishing" school. She is Latvian and a wonderful wife, I'm sure. At dinner we jokingly received proper training from her on table manners and utensil usage. Actually, it was interesting and funny. Upon entering our individual cabana huts after dinner, we realized we had made a mistake and forgotten to leave the lights on, as directed by the management. Have you ever been in the jungle? I hadn't. We flipped the lights on... literally, the walls crawled with insects, palmettos, geckos and iguanas. In less than 2 seconds, they disappeared. I stood watching in amazement as a 6 inch long lizard of some type slid gracefully
