Short stories: The American Dream

The Popcorn Tale

A young man feeling good, a little intoxicated with confidence, walks into a bar. He takes a seat at the bar and orders a beer. He looks around the place and spots a lady, she is serving drinks to some people at a table. He is checking her out - he likes what he sees, tall, decent figure, pleasant face and long dark hair. She notices him scoping her out. He grins, she returns it with a smile. He casually turns in his bar stool away from her, perpendicular. He takes a few drinks from his beer, holding his cigarette in his other hand. He looks her way. She is checking him out but does not want him to know; he sees past it. She is now over at the popcorn box doing something. He gets of his stool and curiously walks towards her. As he gets there he kindly asks her what she is doing. She is a little nervous, she goes into detail on how the popcorn is made. He gently interrupts her and asks if he can pour a bowl. She offers and he accepts. He then says to her, "Thanks Popcorn Lady." She smiles a genuine smile and so does he. He casually turns and walks back to his stool with a blow of popcorn in one hand. He orders another beer. Sitting there drinking he sees her approaching his side of the bar with drinks. Just as she is passing his way he turns and calls out, "Hey Popcorn Lady. - she smiles and he asks her, "Can I pop your corn?" She laughs, she is amused. She slaps him playfully on the shoulder and walks off, rejecting his offer. He is feeling good, grinning with confidence. A few minutes elapse before she finally returns from her round, he calls to her, "Hey Popcorn Lady." She smiles curiously and he says, "I was just thinking that I was a corn on the cob." Her face lights up. She places her tray on the bar and cordially introduces herself to him. In his mind she will always be the Popcorn Lady.
