Opening a restaurant

If you are thinking of opening a restaurant, take time to think it through before you commit to the task. There are many restaurants out there already. If you want to be successful, you need to be realistic about the type restaurant you are going to open.

Unless you have billions of dollars, you can not expect to open a restaurant chain to compete with McDonald's or any number of fast food restaurants. They have been doing it a long time and have huge resources to back them in competing with you. Becoming successful against a chain is something you will need to evolve into. A start up like this would almost certainly become a failure. They are waiting to eat your lunch so to speak.

Unless you have deep pockets, you probably do not want to open a Chinese restaurant between two successful competitors, unless the market demands it. You need to study the market, demographics, hire a marketer should you decide to do it. Marketing is very important no matter what type restaurant you open, but if you have a saturated market, it is of supreme importance. Reinventing the wheel is a tired endeavor and very often leads to failure.

Observe other restaurants, both successes and failures. Do your homework to figure out the underlying reason for each and what you can do to duplicate or avoid each of these situations. Opening a ice cream parlor in January may not be a good idea, even if a town has no ice cream parlors. Timing is a very important factor to consider when you are studying other restaurant successes and failures. Location is important also. You probably would not want to open a Chinese restaurant next to the county animal shelter. Everyone has heard the jokes about dog and cat being served. Appearances are everything sometimes.

Serve something that the market is demanding, but also that you are passionate about. I sell a product better when I believe in it. Don't sell your soul to the devil to get a restaurant. Make it your restaurant by serving your menu. Always serve a smile, all markets demand that. Getting started is easier when people like you. People come back where they are welcome and feel taken care of. Price is not as important as value. People want good food and they want good service. Most are willing to pay for these aspects.

Good luck if you decide to open a restaurant. Don't tack that first dollar to the wall too hard, you may end up needing to use it later.
