How a positive self-image can become a negative

Self-image is how we perceive and feel about ourselves. Our perception may be distorted from the reality or it may be in alignment with the truth. A person with a positive self-image genuinely likes and respects who they are. Their inner dialog speaks to them favorably. They know their worth and recognize their talents, abilities and character. They have confidence and don't feel the need to be someone they aren't, just to fit in or please someone else.

Some negatives can be associated with a positive self-image. There's a fine line between self-confidence and arrogance. If the line is crossed, it can negatively alter the essence of the positive elements. Arrogance possesses a feeling of superiority. Self-confidence doesn't put you on a higher level than others, but on a level that belongs to you - a level where you are unwavering and sure of yourself and your path in life. You are able to speak your mind, feel competent and aware of "self", while being respectful of others and not placing them beneath you. Self-confidence compels people toward you. Arrogance repels, causing people to turn away.

Having an authentic and positive self-image may cause negatives because of jealousy in others and not being accepted in a way you deserve. People may turn their backs as you succeed. You may be criticized unfairly because your positive image becomes a reminder of their insecurities. You are what they want to become, but because they falter in their pursuit, they may see you as the enemy - a force they cannot contend with.

Another possible negative is the person who doesn't push to rise above where they are. They may short-change themselves by feeling they've already achieved the highest level and not strive for more. They may become stagnant and impede potential growth.

A positive self-image without arrogance can enhance the quality of life. It not only serves you well, but should embody a sense of compassion and respect for others. In its purest and realistic form, a positive self-image is empowering and unshakable!
