A career that means something to us is something that we all strive for, but sadly it isn't always possible. The cash driven, debt ridden society that we live in, means that many of us will spend our working life aimlessly making do with a mundane 9-5 job and hating every second of it. All because it isn't financially viable to take that leap.
The beauty of this topic though is that, when building a meaningful career there are absolutely no rules. Be it Interior design, plumbing or taxidermy, the only credential required is passion. The salary is irrelevant (though it is a bonus); long hours wont phase you and even the boring co-worker situation can be worked at, the main thing is that you are doing something that you love.
When I decided to concentrate on my writing as a career, I was a little apprehensive to say the least. My job - although it was most mind numbingly boring position - was paying the bills and I relied on that income. However, the time came when I felt that it was time to take the risk, and I don't regret a second of it.
I trained and completed a Diploma in Freelance Journalism, have recently had my first article published and I am now working towards securing a permanent job in the sector. This has been my life long ambition. Even in the earliest of stages, the transition from Call Centre Agent to Writer has been incredible. I am not only more fulfilled as a person but I have gained in confidence and ability whilst living my ultimate dream. I still have a long way to go until I reach my goal, but a year ago I would have simply dismissed the idea, assuming that I didn't have what it takes.
Fortunately I am lucky enough to have chosen a vocation which is fairly flexible, in the respect that it is something that I can pursue as well as working to pay the bills. This is handy as until I'm given a break, it isn't the most lucrative choice financially. Regardless it is a decision that will be ranked amongst the best that I have ever made, nothing compares to the sense of achievement that I felt upon publishing of my first article. It is a natural adrenaline that comes from your inner passion.
Don't get my wrong it isn't always a happy ending and there will be times when it will be a struggle, but this will only add to the sense of achievement once you do achieve your dreams. Don't be afraid to take a risk with your career. If you are determined enough you will succeed. Life is too short to live half-heartedly so if you get the opportunity, ensure that you grab it with both hands.
