Short stories: The American Dream

To some, the American Dream is a two story house, white picket fence, dog in the yard, and a beautiful wife pregnant with a son. All the bills are caught up, and there's plenty of money in the bank. Sounds like the perfect dream, but not to Neil. You see, Neil has had what most would call a hard life. Some would say he's been through hell. When he was seven he was raped by his uncle. An uncle that used to rape his mother. When he was ten his father died, forcing him and his mother to live with his uncle. One morning he woke up to hear a commotion in the other bedroom where his mother was staying. After he turned sixteen one morning a police officer came to their apartment. He told Neil that his mother had been murdered, her body mutilated, and that she'd been put in a dumpster. After the funeral, which her boss paid for, the boy gathered up what little he had and moved again.. this time further west. Things got harder when he ran out of money. With no real job skills or training he did what most would do.. he stole. Lasting a year or so in this manner he was picked up outside of Tuscon on a charge of grand theft auto. He spent his eighteenth birthday behind bars. When he got out, he looked around at all the things people take for granted, and, on his twenty
