Packing tips: What not to take on a tropical vacation

Make sure you pack for comfort. Remember, you are travelling to a tropical paradise, not the Arctic. My first and best advice is to take comfortable shoes. Don't do what I did - pack my newest and cutest pair of shoes. Boy, did I regret it. You don't want to be lagging behind on adventures because of uncomfortable footwear, calluses and blisters. I was really uncomfortable on our expensive Jamaican vacation - all for a new pair of fifty dollar shoes. There are not enough bandages in the world to cover up that mistake. I would suggest taking two pair of shoes - sandals and tennis shoes. If you are a woman, you may want to throw in a pair of dressy sandals. Just make sure all of your shoes are thoroughly broken in, no matter what shoes you decide to take.

You will want to take lightweight, comfortable and carefree clothing. Polyester, no. Cotton, yes. You wil want to take loose clothing, preferably in lighter colors. There are many companies that specialize in travel clothing. I have seen no-iron, wrinkle resistant, travel weight clothing at affordable prices. It is worth the investment, especially if you travel a lot. For men, I have seen travel weight blazers that are lightweight, breathable and wrinkle free. Perfect for business meetings or a dressy night out. For women, I have seen "slinky" wear - dresses, skirts, outfits. You just take it out of your luggage, shake it out, put it on, and you're ready for a night out on the town. Of course, you can never go wrong with a couple of pairs of shorts, swim trunks/swimsuits, capri pants/khakis and undergarments.

Another lesson I have learned in my foreign travels is not taking my smallest suitcase. You may feel proud of yourself for packing everything in like a sardine, but you won't feel so smart when you are trying to figure out how to bring all your souvenirs back on the airplane. I always bring my biggest suitcase (although it may be half empty on the way to my destination. I have never failed to bring it back full (and underweight) from a trip abroad. With airline security and carry-ons being increasingly scrutinized, it is easier to check baggage, rather than deal with too many carry-ons.

What if I get cold? You can always find a long-sleeved shirt for sale in a gift shop, even a light jacket, and of course, you get another souvenir, one that is also practical. And if all else fails, grab a beach towel to cover up with. And there's always body heat. Snuggle up with a friend.

Speaking of beach towels, I never take one on trips. They are bulky, weighty and take up lots of room. There will always be towels available in your room and poolside for your use. Leave room in your luggage for souvenirs. Or you can always buy a souvenir beach towel. Your towel from Antigua will definitely stand out at the beach.

Always remember comfort is key and you can't go wrong on your tropical vacation.
