First-generation college students as role models

by Sarah Perryman

Created on: October 04, 2007

When a student enters college it is an experience to remember. For those that have worked hard to exceed their parent's level of education it is the first milestone in their lives that show what they are made of. These students beam with pride when they are first in their family to attend college. They know what it means to them, their family, their community, and their future. They also encompass and develop skills that can be found in a select few.

Very few people develop leadership skills like those that have put in the time and work to attend college and excel at it. Often, after transitioning into the college setting, these students develop an understanding of what they want to get out of there education. From this, they begin to lead others in the class in group activities and discussions. They stand out because they want to learn, like to see other students learn, and want to receive the best education possible. Though they did not intend to become a leader, others begin to look to them for ideas and assistance.

First generation college students are also highly driven. These students have pushed their limits time and time again. They, like the best role models, know that there are restrictions but these can be stretched and broken. By relying on themselves, struggling through assignments, deadlines, financial issues, and social issues they have learned a great deal about their personal limitations and the limitations of others.

Also, students in this category show strong common sense. They apply world knowledge to subjects and every-day activities. They develop and use strategies and remain flexible during their college years. This allows them to handle various situations with an understanding on the ending and move quickly form one idea to another.

Self-pride and confidence are two of the greatest qualities in a role model. Students who push forward and enter the college or university system are filled with pride. They tell themselves they have done a good job every time they complete a stressful class or pass a difficult exam. They already know that the struggle is worth it and they can meet the challenge. This can be seen in how they talk, how they listen, and how they present themselves.

Student's who accomplish this goal are the very best kind of role model. Not only have they accomplished something for themselves, but they have pushed the bar higher for those who will come after them. As role models, they encompass a high range of positive qualities that can be easily admired by others.
