Growing into your new look with braces and retainers requires proper care and attention to the foods you choose and the maintenance of your gums. No more chewing on pencils and pens, candies and gum. This process of diligence will be worth it.
Using floss threaders with floss, an electric toothbrush and a bit of mouth wash are the keys for cleaning 3 or more times per day. (ideally after every meal and snack) Avoiding sticky, fizzy, staining, acid type foods are the keys to eating as well, your dental team should provide you with a list of good and bad foods.
This will help prevent dental caries and bad breath.
Always keep your dental appointments.
One of the reason's braces take a couple of years or more to do their job;
If the teeth were moved into position to quickly, the roots of each tooth could resorb (this means disappear) due to too much friction in too little time. A gradual movement that simulates a natural occurrence is the least traumatic to each tooth being pulled into a new position. Plus this allows a dentist to monitor your teeth and modify if needed. Not only will your teeth be in a new position but your jaw features will change due to your new bite.
The retainer is there to maintain the changes that have been produced by your braces.
Be sure to brush, floss the proper way, just as the dentist demonstrated. Remember to eat with a conscious mind and bring your floss and brush everywhere to ensure that no cavities start to form around the devices within your mouth.
