What it means to be created in God's image

Some people say we are all a part of God because we are created in His image. It is an interesting notion that Eastern religions have picked up on and run with, but in saying this, we underestimate the power of our Creator. Those who say we are all gods should ask themselves why, if this be true, are we all so concerned about sickness and death, and other aspects of life over which we for the most part have no control? Followers of mystical teachings and practices should consider what the proverb writer Solomon once said "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding". (Proverbs 9:10) If God, our Creator, is not a part of the equation in our contemplation of life and what it is about, we can easily get lost and confounded by it.

Just to back up for a second, I assume that the vast majority of people in the world believe there is a Creator. I base this partially on what King David of Biblical fame said: "The fool says in his heart, "There is no God"(Psalm 14:1). It is a conclusion based on common sense. Nonetheless, for those who are still caught up in Darwinian dogma and the notion that evolution is responsible for us being here, I would ask that they open their mind and familiarize themselves with the latest genetic research involving 'irreducible complexity' and the basic building blocks of life.

The fact that we are created in God's image should evoke not pride in ourselves, rather humility and reverence for the Creator. Because we have a part of the divine nature within us we are able to reason and express emotions. We have a sense of time, both backwards and forward. We are capable of conceptualizing and being creative just as God is. Furthermore, we can appreciate who God is, because that's how He created us. Finally, we sense within us and are told by Scriptures that we possess an eternal soul that will survive us after our bodies die and decay.

Of course, being so "wonderfully and fearfully made", we also have cause to pause and ponder a few things such as why, and so what? The fact that we are 'like God' should automatically tell us that He created us with the purposes of relating to us. The Bible, for those who care to read it, is full of examples of this. Christ, the key figure of the New Testament, and focus of Old Testament prophecies, is the means through which we can achieve the relationship we all know is missing within ourselves. Yes, we have godlike features about us, but that does not mean we are gods. Far from it! Just look at the stars at night and you will get a glimpse of how small we really are and how awesome and magnificent our Creator is. We can't reach up to Him unless He first chooses to reach down to us. This is what He did through Christ, and so, if we are the least bit interested in knowing God, we should get to know who Christ is. This is not a sermon, just a refutation to those who are confident enough to make such claims as "we are all gods" or "we are all a part of God". There is a world of difference between saying "we are all a part of God" and "God is a part of all of us".

What is even more profound and puzzling is the fact that so many people choose to avoid or reject a God who is loving and cares for each and every one of us. But this has to do with the fact that there is sin in this world, and that's a subject for another day.
