Building a meaningful career is not just about "the job" but about the journey involved in reaching your goals for lifelong happiness and success. Having a meaningful career does not always mean having the fattest paycheck or the biggest title, but rather the enrichment and satisfaction that the right career choice provides.
Building a career is not something that one does over the course of a few years. A career is built over a lifetime. Whether you are a nurse or a nanny, a teacher or a tailor, it's not about what you do, it's about how you do it. A nurse who hates medicine or a teacher who hates kids is never going to achieve success and fulfillment. Rather it's the person who carefully examines, who they are, and what they want to be, that succeeds in life and career.
Finding a career involves examining who you are and what you want to accomplish in your life. I suggest writing down your goals, seeing them on paper will give you focus. What interests you? If you like medicine you don't have to be a doctor, consider being a nurse or an x-ray technician. If you enjoy traveling consider a career as a travel agent. A writers or artist can parlay their talent into a career as a public relations rep. or non-profit fund raiser. Having a skill set often qualifies you for multiple jobs. The key is finding the right one for you.
What if you want to change careers? That is a question that people often ask themselves. Changing careers later in life is a way to boost your moral and find fulfillment as you grow older. Did you spend your life as a nurse? Consider a career in medical sales. Were you a teacher? Try being a museum tour guide. The possibilities are endless.
Remember, a career is a reflection of your personality. So don't try to put a square peg in a round hole. Even if it takes a few years, take the time and figure out what you want to accomplish with your life and career. Finding a meaningful career will not only put a smile on your face when you walk out the door to work, but will benefit the people who you serve with that smile!
