You can never be too careful when it comes to your children's safety. This includes when they are online. There are many predators out there just waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting child whose parents didn't teach them the important things they need to know about surfing the web.
It's not the fact that our children surf the web that puts them in danger. They are more vulnerable in chat rooms and any place that they can post a personal profile. This includes but is not limited to MySpace.com.
Here are some tips that will allow your child to surf, chat and post without putting themselves in harms way:
1. Do not allow your child to have a computer in their own room. There should be a family computer in a room that you can easily see what is going on when your child is on the computer. Your children's safety comes before the privacy.
2. Use a program that will block certain areas of the web from your child. After all, there are certain places where children shouldn't be and that they shouldn't have to just stumble upon by accident.
3. Make sure that your child knows not to give out personal information on the web such as address, phone number, town or even the state that you live in.
4. Websites like MySpace don't have to be considered a dangerous place for your child. There are safety issues if your child does not put on their privacy settings. Set up the site with your child. Make sure to use the privacy settings. The only people that will be able to contact them are people that know their real name or their email address. No one else will be able to contact them or see the information on their site.
Protecting your children from the sick people that are out there is an everyday job. Whether they are playing in the backyard or on the computer, we as parents must keep a vigilant watch over them. It is our job and we should take it very seriously. Do your part in making certain that your child knows how to stay safe everywhere they go.
