Writing a book review that holds a professional and high quality standard takes time and effort. A book review includes more than just a summary of the content. Besides offering your opinion on the book there are a lot of aspects to incorporate into the final review. Here are 6 easy steps to help you learn what to focus on and how to properly present your comments in order to write a solid book review:
1. Basic information
First, introduce the book by including the basics: title, author, the year the book was published, type (fiction, biography, etc.) and genre (sci-fi, romance, horror, suspense, etc.). Also introduce general but less specific aspects such as the theme of the book and even some quick background information on the author.
2. Brief overview
Second, remember to make sure the reader understands early on what the book is all about. Besides the above basic information, write a short and general summary of the content. Tell your readers what the story is all about but don't go into too much detail.
3. Your opinion and reactions through examples
As you write, make clear what you think of the various aspects by providing examples of what you find good and bad. Give examples from your brief overview. Share your reactions with the readers and offer examples on why you like/dislike something specific. Don't just say "the book was good". Instead, put some meat to your writing by adding examples of what you're trying to say. Save your final opinion on the book to last.
Also, when providing your own opinion, be honest yet respectful. Don't be too harsh, but if the book in question really isn't worth the time and effort, ensure that your readers know that you think so once they've read your review.
4. Summarize your review
Conclude your review by summarizing your opinions. What is your final view on the book? What do you wish should have been improved? And remember, if at this point you think of something new, don't just write it in this section. Add it to your previous text and refer to it in your final summary.
5. Remember the readers
A book review is written with the purpose of letting others know whether or not the reviewed book suits them or not. Remember to always keep your readers in mind and don't forget that the intended readers haven't read the book yet. However, don't over-do your explanations. Leave some room for thought and try to make your readers interested in continuing to read your review as well as the actual book, if you're willing to recommend it. In the end, make sure your readers understand your final opinion: what did you like/dislike about the book and would you recommend it to your readers?
6. Flowing but structured text
Last but not least, don't make the mistake of ending up with a cluttered text. Make sure things appear in a natural order. Remember to first explain the situation to the reader before you offer your own opinion. Make an effort to incorporate your thoughts and opinions into the text in a natural way. That way, the final review will be a flowing text which feels natural to read.
By following the above tips you can be sure to end up with a solid book review. Keep your readers in mind as you provide an extended but not overly detailed view of the book and your thoughts of it. In the end, let the readers decide for themselves whether or not the book suits them.
