The challenges of teaching English as a foreign language in large classes

'teaching' itself is a very big 'challenge' and if it's 'a foreign language' the resposibilities of the instructors increase two or three folds due to the fact that the international aspect being added to it.

Nevertheless the 'challenge' mnust be taken up willingly by all those interested to 'teach a foreign language' due to the competitive element being present and the willingness of the teacher can be judged by an effective feedback from their students.

The 'challenge to teach English as a Foreign Language' is evident as 'English' as we all know is the 'international language' and is predominantly and constantly needed in many important areas such as social, personal, business, educational or the like. This also goes for countries where 'English' is not the native language but is used for official and communicative purposes for example in India, Singapore, Nigeria.

Hence, I am of the opinion that any contribution in the field of 'Teaching English as a Foreign Language' will serve a useful purpose for both the students in particular as well as for the people in general specially in these countries.

Adopting an electic approach for teaching English as a Foreign Language can be well recognized nowadays as teaching of English must be principled without being dogmatic, and systematic without being inflexible. The underlying principles of successful foreign language teaching specially English can provide teachers in a wide range of EFL situations with a basic level of competence which can be a springboard for their professional development.

The innovative meaning of 'foreign language' if properly understood eventually instigates the reader to probe deeper to investigate the significance of 'Teaching English as a Foreign Language'.

Of course it is evident that there is large amount of research done regarding this field of education with numerous books written on each skill of language, i.e. speaking, listening, reading and writing by many famous linguists. ........

The 'challenge' is how to pick and choose the relevant points necessary from them so that any research carried out relating to this field can really be a significant milestone from where the other researchers can go forward and take maximum benefit in the best possible way.

Lastly, according to my point of view the 'key point of TEFL is the svery strong emphasis on the native language interference which has been and is still being largely dealt upon.

So my dear readers ready to take up the challenge ?... Go on! remember ... just as the proverb says 'smile and the world will smile with you' in the same way just go on and the world will go with you... Like in HELIUM there is an unending search for knowledge ... in your life there should be an unending road for going on and on............................ .............................. .........
