Giving plastic bags in supermarkets should be forbidden, as it's totally unnecessary and it causes a giant amount of waste. Some of those bags might be used again for bin liners, but most of them go straight to the dump, where they will stay forever. It's just pollution of the earth and that's something we should stop a.s.a.p.
What's the problem of bringing your own shopping bags to the supermarket? You know, such strong, fabric bags that last years. Some people do it, but not closely enough.
On top of the environmental issue, the number of barrels of oil needed every year to make those plastic bags is more than we can imagine. Everyone is scared that we will run out of oil, so let's start with forbidding plastic bags.
And if you can't forbid it, then putting a charge on them might be a good way to encourage people to bring their own bags and refuse plastic.
In all other shops plastic bags might still be acceptable. Loads of things we buy in an impulse and we didn't bring a shopping bag with us. And when you buy clothes you need a plastic bag to keep them clean. But you usually don't go to the supermarket in an impulse. You go there intentionally, so you can bring your own bags. There is no reason whatsoever to bring your groceries home in umpteen plastic bags.
And every time I see people taking home there full trolley of groceries in plastic bags I wonder how long it will take them to bring all those bags from the car into the home. I usually only need to walk twice and that job is done. But a full boot of plastic bags must take quite a while. So it's also very impractical to do it that way.
So if anyone can give me one good reason why supermarkets should give everyone plastic bags on the expense of the general clients, then I would like to hear that. For I can't think of one.
