Judas Iscariot must certainly be the most notorious of the disciples. The subject of how he died has, I believe, been the subject of many debates. Whether he went to heaven or hell is something that we do not know, but it is my opinion that the individual answer to this question depends on how we perceive God to be.
Those of us who see the Father as an angry Person who smites all that disobey Him, will most certainly believe the Judas went to hell. The opposite is almost certainly true, that those who see the Almighty as loving, kind and forgiving will believe that Judas was forgiven when he realized that he had sinned and was taken into heaven.
The next question that races around my thoughts is : have heaven and hell already begun? Will this not be accomplished on Jesus' second coming? For the purpose of Judas' fate, let us assume that heaven and hell already exist.
Perhaps God had a dual purpose for Judas. When the Creator placed the tree of life' in the center of the Garden of Eden and told Adam and Eve not to eat of it, I believe He gave them a choice! Could the choice that Judas made not be God's infinitely wise way of reminding us that He gave us free will? Although God is eternally All Knowing, we still can choose His Way or not. I believe that the Lord definitely always has a plan B and knows the outcome of what we choose. In this case, Judas CHOSE to betray Jesus.
Judas' death is also subject to debate. Is there a reason the Bible does not clarify HOW he died? My personal belief is that God wants us to contemplate the fate of Judas to remind us that the choices we make can alter the outcome of our own personal destiny.
The possibility that Judas committed suicide leads us to believe that he went to hell, because suicide is mostly understood to be an unforgivable sin. Yet, how do we know that his possible suicide (or suicide in general) was his last act? It is greatly believed that to God time has no meaning. What we perceive as a split second could be entirely different to God. Is it not possible that during that split second between the act of suicide and dying, a person can realize that what he/she is doing is a sin and then repent? If this is so, then I believe that Judas went to heaven.
