The benefits of a modded or chipped XBOX

by Brad F.

The benefits of a modded Xbox in my opinion would be substantial. Currently users have to use their PC to peer into the files on the game disk to be able to create new mods for games or fun little "hacks". When a mod chip is installed on a console with an interface it not only gives the user the ability to inject foreign code into the game possibly increasing the fun of the game, but it gives the user greater knowledge of the system and how the games are created.

I do not however what my opinion to be misconstrued as I am not condoning the use of game protection hacks and other devices that allow people to illegally make copies of games so that they can be mass distributed to the general population for free, rather I am expressing my interest in learning all I can about the consoles and the creation of video games and how they can be modified with the use of homemade software and circuitry.

The fact that people can and do make these devices says a lot for the general enthusiast. Most people play their games and then toss the aside to collect dust on a shelf or they use them for trade in value to get that next big hit, but there are those who want to get the most out of the money that they paid for the game and they have built a whole community around creating mods for games, especially RPG's (role-playing Games). I like the fact that after I am done exploring the entire game world and have gotten every item and every skill that you can get in the game, I can pop in a game save (or create one of my own) and reply the game in its entirety with new creatures and new items and skills/spells. I believe this makes the game more interesting, rather than waiting until the day when the game company releases a sequel or patch for the game that allows me to get maybe a little more fun out of it for the many hours, days or weeks that they put into creating the mod, when I can go download one of sometimes hundreds of different mods for the same game.

Some would same that modding takes away from the way the game is supposed to be played and a lot of companies do not like it when people create mods for their games and will not lend a hand to those trying to create such mods for fear that no one will buy sequels to their games if everyone in the world can create their own versions of the game, but I think that game developers should be more open to the idea of mods for their games and consoles. If you look at PC games versus console games, there are thousands of mods for hundreds
