Role models, as well as mentors, are prominent in our homes and of course in the limelight of the red carpet, sports and other popular categories. Adults, teenagers, and young children alike are likely to choose their role models by the way they make them feel about themselves. A role model provides a mental vision of what one might be able to accomplish in their own life.
However, in todays society and culture, role models seem to be as sheep in wolves clothing. Take our teenage generation for example. They might start out by worshiping a young and upcoming singer on a perfectly innocent children's network, dream about achieving the same popularity as the performer, only to be led down the path of drug use, drinking, lust and inappropriate behavior later in the performers life. By this time our children have been hooked on the personality and in most cases are desensitized with each step of the role model's demise. It is kinda like starting off seeing a really scary werewolf movie that eventually gets less and less offensive as you advance to chain saws and bloody cut em up scenes.
Although our best role models should come from our own homes, many are led to depend on others away from the home front to provide the feeling of hope and encourage one's dreams. This is dangerous to say the least as we live in a world that promotes immoral acts, cultures and lifestyles. We should cling to our wiser family, friends, and church clergymen who direct us towards a happier, more free, moral existence. This is where parents must be firm.
It would do us all good to choose our role models more carefully. Dig deeper not only into what a role model provides ultimately for us but also what we want for ourselves in the long run.
