Many Christians have a difficult time deciding whether they should celebrate certain holidays. This is due to the fact that many of these holidays have their origins in Paganism. It is easy to see why this would be a problem to someone that wants to only worship the one true God. However, there is one holiday in particular which seems to be the most troublesome for Christians and that is Halloween.
It is true that Halloween is derived from a Pagan Holiday. Quite simply the Roman Catholic Church could not stop the indigenous people of the British Isles from celebrating their Pagan ritual of "Samhain." Samhain was a day which the people had set aside to honor the dead, through rituals. It was soon renamed, "All Saints Day," and the night before eventually evolved into our current holiday, Halloween.
I find it odd that many Christians regard Christmas as a Holy Day, even though it is rooted in the same Pagan rituals. So why is it, that Halloween should be treated any differently? The truth is that there is no difference. Ask yourself, do you think that if you celebrate Halloween, then you are automatically worshipping the Satan? Is it your fear that if you celebrate a holiday you will deny God and start worshipping other deities? No, that is not what is in your spirit. You know that there is one God and beside him there is no other. You simply cannot accidentally worship other gods and practice witchcraft. It is what is in your heart and soul, and if you love God, then there is no fear.
I know Christians that believe that it is pure evil to dress up for Halloween and they despise anyone who does. This is bewildering to me considering the fact that the Bible tells us that we should let no man judge us in meat, drink, or a High Holy Day, nor are we to judge them. This saying applies to festivals as well. Christians should understand that there is one God and that anything offered to another god is meaningless, because there is no other god to accept it. That is why Paul says to not worry about eating meat which has been sacrificed to other gods. Paul also makes it clear that nothing is unclean, but the man which believes it is unclean should not do it.
What Paul is saying is that it depends upon the faith of the man and that some men can eat it and some men cannot, but not to despise the man that does and vice-versa. So why do we worry about such trivial things when we know that there is one true God and that we worship him only? It is not what a man puts in his mouth that corrupts him, but what comes out. I do not believe that a Christian which celebrates Halloween is practicing witchcraft, or worshipping the devil.
It is my opinion that Halloween is a fun holiday which brings a family together for another special night in the year. This holiday can be celebrated in good fun with your children. It is a simple holiday, not worship to Satan, not a sacrifice to the dead, and certainly not the most dangerous thing in a Christian's life. I guess it is all a matter of perspective. For me, it is a spiritually meaningless holiday which is just plain fun to celebrate. My children enjoy dressing up, and I enjoy spending the time with them walking around the neighborhood meeting my neighbors and getting some free candy.
Nevertheless, Paul does state that if it offends you, then you should not do it if even for your conscience sake. This means that it is your conscience which will convict you and it is very difficult to escape your own condemnation. I have come to believe that Christians are much harder on themselves than God will be.
