Put the snakes on the table so all can see the risk. Campaign fund-raising is not about voter support, it is about group support, special interest group support of the candidates. The Tobacco Lobby spends millions to prevent laws from harming the sale of cigarettes. The Unions spend millions to influence our government to make laws that protect workers. Some union workers may not like the laws made. Some smokers may not agree with the laws big tobacco supports.
Big money influences our law makers, which influence, the FTC, the FDA, the chemical industry, the energy industry. Money with this influence is what now fuels American politics. This is true for Democrat and for Republican. The ones without a say in how government impacts us are the individual voters. We have become powerless.
Some of the areas where current law proves business and special interests have stolen the voter's voice are as follows.
Laws that encourage oil companies to stop making new refineries when the lack of refineries causes the price of gas to go up. The oil company benefits, the consumer suffers. (Note, these companies are no longer truly competing or we would have had new refineries.) The energy lobby is one of the strongest in America, and energy companies have had the most profit ever in the last couple of years.
Laws that permit unrestricted interest rates and uncontrolled behavior by collectors. This is coupled by laws that essentially eliminated bankruptcy. It sure was not the individual voter that wanted to be put under a squeeze.
Laws that let our educational institutions burden students with loans but don't require those same institutions to deliver an education. Student loan lenders and colleges form a huge lobby.
Laws that make it harder and harder to go into business, often passed as a result of lobbying by the businesses that are already established. You have to be licensed to braid hair in many places now. When is the last time a bad hair braid caused permanent physical damage? Who is protected?
Laws that prevent Americans from buying the same drug for less across the border. That was a big win for the drug companies. Yes, foreign purple pills could kill you, but American bought purple pills are safe.
The law that needs to pass is pretty straight forward. Groups are not allowed to give to campaign funds. Since groups are not individuals, they should not and ought not vote. The law needs to say, only individual voters can give to campaigns and that giving should be limited to $50.00 per candidate. If a group wants to promote an agenda, they will have to get each of their members to write a check. Then it is individuals with power, not groups and special interests.
We may have gone to far already and lost our republic. Are you willing to help reclaim the freedom it once stood for? If power resides with the interest groups, you can bet our freedom, and economic well being are not being protected.
