How a college degree opens the door to more job opportunities

In order to discover how a college degree opens the door to more job opportunities for you, let's discuss how your relationship to your degree is directly related to how your employer's relationship may relate to you. Doors don't open all by themselves - the following interview (with yourself) may help you use your degree to find more doors, open the ones you do find, and allow you to walk through them successfully!

Learning all that "stuff" in all those classes doesn't exactly make you smarter, often just exposes you to more knowledge. Did you "soak" the knowledge in? How many times did you have to review material in order to recall it? How much of what you learned have you been asked to apply in other settings (other than on tests that is)?

Did you stay with your coursework routinely? Were you in attendance (in mind and body)? Were you the one who asked questions or the one who stayed up all night "cramming" for tests?

Why did, or do you want to get a degree at all? What do your plans include for getting your degree, but more importantly, what are your plans once the deed is done?

Is your degree something that you have a "burning" interest in? What is your boredom level? Is your social life during college involving any of the potential work your degree should lead to?

How deep is your perseverance level toward getting your degree? Do you feel your grade point average reflects your intelligence/abilities? What does your degree mean to you?

Once you answer these questions, they will give you insights of how your degree will lead to more job opportunities, since the business world will be looking at your from a different perspective than the academic world. The answers to these questions should indicate to you some of your own qualifications leading to potential employers finding you. Do the answers about your actions/feeling while getting a degree or how you went about (or plan to go about) getting it, or what it means to you, tell you whether you are ready for a professional position, para-professional, or a non-professional? Such answers may also give you an indication of whether your "job" opportunities should be expanded into a self-employment setting, as an entrepreneur, or even into being an employer yourself.

It is not only the degree itself, but what you understand about yourself because of the degree that leads to opportunities. By studying your answers, you will be able to see how attaining your degree results in the appearance of a variety of doors!
