How to prepare for a job interview

Preparation separates the good interview from the great interview.

You have passed the first hurdle by getting the interview. What do you need to do now? While every job interview is different, there are key tactics that will insure a slam-dunk interview. Here are a few tips from a fellow jobseeker.

Believe in yourself. You cannot sell yourself if you are projecting that you do not believe you can do the job. Employers are not idiots. They are trained to notice insecurities, verbal and non-verbal cues, as well as the big liar. You never want to project that you have drama. Employers know that you have a life; the fact is they just do not care. They want to know what you can do for them. It is harsh but true.

Before the interview, you will need to research the company, and position. If possible, speak with current employees. Look the company up online; ask for a website address and a job description when the employer calls you for an interview.

The night before the interview set out your clothes. I know this sounds silly but it works. If you are a nervous interviewer, this is one less decision to make. About outfit, make sure it is professional. Ladies this is not a date, fashion show, or the Club. Make sure your outfit is tasteful and looks neat. Keep makeup and perfume to a minimum. Gentlemen, no jeans! You are not going to hang with friends. Even in a business casual setting you want to project that, you are taking the interview serious.

In the interview, be concise and to the point. Do not oversell it but focus on your strengths. Now is the time to mention the attributes in your resume. Be honest and do not contradict what your resume says. Do not regurgitate your resume word for word either. Ask questions about the position, company, and room for growth.

Send a thank you note or email. You are not done with the interview until you do this.

Lastly, remember this. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. There is no pressure to get this job. If your gut is telling you that you do not fit, listen to it. The last thing that you need is to accept a position and hate it. If they do not like you then no harm done, move on to the next interview. I wish you luck in your pursuits.
