Pregnancy brain: Dealing with your new-found forgetfulness

by Brandi Borland

With pregnancy there are so many new things you experience. Of course there is the weight, then the constantly swinging hormones, the heartburn, the cravings, and the... the... what was that other thing? Oh right, the forgetfulness!

Pregnancy-induced forgetfulness can be very aggravating, and sometimes depressing. It's hard enough to remember that daily dose of prenatal vitamin, without adding any weekly appointments or exhausting errands. Your once sharp mind has disappeared just like the sight of your feet. No matter how frustrating, you can deal with this!

Notes are always a helpful little reminder. By going to your local wholesale club and buying -in bulk- sticky notes of all sizes, small legal pads and notebooks, and a pocket book with a calendar to slip into your purse. Jot down anything that you think you might forget: grocery items to pick up at the store, your child's soccer practice, your prenatal vitamin(!), and even your daily to-do's if it helps. You'll most likely have notes posted everywhere, but it's only 9 months and you've got a lot of doctor's appointments to remember.

It can also be helpful to enlist the help of others, whether they be family members, friends, or your doctor's secretary. Upon the invitation of an event or scheduling of an appointment, politely ask if the person might be able to call you with a reminder of the event or appointment a day or two in advance. You'd be surprised that a lot of hostesses will gladly oblige if it means you'll be in attendance.

A lot of different kinds of self-recorders are on the market now days. These handy little devices fit in the palm of your hand and record whatever thought you may have at the push of a button. Later you can play back your verbal notes and jot them down on paper.

Take advantage of your partner. He is there to help you out through this pregnancy. Explain the forgetfulness to him, or mark off a chapter in your pregnancy book for him to read sometime. I think you'll find that he'd be glad to help in any way that he can.

Most importantly, don't schedule too much for yourself, you'll become exhausted and pregnancy side-effects only worsen when this happens. This is a time to take care of yourself and take it easy. You'll have plenty to do when the baby gets here!
