Should laws be passed to limit gun ownership further

There are several reasons that more gun laws should not, under any circumstances, be passed. Regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum, these reasons should come not from political beliefs, but from simple use of logic. Unfortunately, many anti-gun extremist organizations fail to use logic and instead choose to inject baseless, emotional arguments into the mix.

Reason #1: Laws that prohibit or restrict gun ownership in any way suffer from a single fatal flaw - the assumption that criminals will obey the law. For example, will banning a particular style of firearm keep that firearm from being used in any given crime? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Will passing a law that makes it illegal to carry a concealed firearm keep a criminal from carrying the same concealed firearm? Again, the answer is a resounding no. This is why we call them criminals. They fail to obey the law.

Reason #2: The 2nd Amendment to the Bill of Rights guarantees my right to keep and bear arms. When researched against the writings of the founding fathers, one finds that they did not intend the 2nd Amendment to form the National Guard, nor did they intend it to protect the rights of hunters. In fact, the founding fathers intended the 2nd Amendment to be used not only for individuals to protect themselves from crime, but also to guard against and to provide a means for the citizenry to fight back against an out of control government (see the Federalist Papers).

Reason #3: Instead of being based on sound, firm logic, gun laws are all too often based upon emotional arguments, ie. "It's for the children...". While no one will disagree with the death of a child being one death too many, how does passing more anti-gun legislation address the death of children? Instead, those pushing for these extremist anti-gun laws should be lobbying for more anti-criminal and pro-education regulations. Studies have shown that programs such as D.A.R.E. and similar teen pregnancy education campaigns often work wonders in communities across the country. Yet, when gun safety education is pushed in the public school system, the extremist anti-gun lobby comes out strongly opposed to it.

Overall, decades of anti-gun measures have failed to make any reasonable headway against gun crimes and preventing child deaths. Instead of pushing more anti-gun measures, we should be looking at ways to properly train and educate our children on the safe use of firearms.
