There are obvious things one must do to make a good impression on a future employer. Dressing neatly and appropriately, being on time for the interview, and dont forget to wear a pleasant smile, all go without saying.
A few helpful tips:
When the employer is asking you questions, pause before you answer. Make sure you understand his question. If you dont, ask for clarification. No shame in this, it shows the interviewer you are humble enough to be taught. Do not interrupt in an attempt to show him how smart you are by finishing his sentences for him!
Answer questions honestly and thoroughly. Lies have to be remembered, the truth does not!
Usually you will be asked "do you have any questions" near the end of the interview.
Make sure you have at least 2 well-thought out intellegent questions about the position/company.
To that end, make it your business to know some history on the comapany's business by doing some research.
Next. Remember your manners. They are a dying art, true, but having good eye contact, a firm handshake and saying "please, thank-you, excuse me" are more remembered than, "yeah, naw, I dunno"
Rehearse: Have a trusted friend/family member play the role of the interviewer. Give them a copy of what should have been your "impeccably clean resume" and let them grill you. You'll be surprised at how empowering that can be and how you can learn to make less mistakes.
Laslty, even if you should not get the job, send a "thank you for your time" card. You might be the next one on the list chosen, if the first choice made does not work out!
