If there was an award for "Best Father" my husband Louis would certainly be the first prize winner. He is an incredible man, an anchor in the times of trouble, and someone I could always depend on. Every once in a while, someone great comes into our lives, for me that person is my husband. We have been together since our early 20's and through the years, I truly could not remember a time when he didn't step up to the plate.
When I met my husband, I already had my first son, who is now 16. Donovan turned three the year I met Louis. We met under some strange circumstances, that when we look back, we knew it was God's hands that was in the midst of it all.
I became a mom at 17, and truly didn't know which road I was heading down, all I knew was that I had a dream of one day succeeding at this thing called life. After we met my husband immediately jumped on board, moved me and my son into a wonderful studio apartment, away from the basement apartment we stayed at it with about 4 other people. And I said "about," because we often had visitors who would show up and never leave. But such guest can be forgiven, after-all at the time we were all young adults just trying to find our way. We weren't bad or dangerous, we all had a sense of self and pride which forced us to keep our environment clean and we were always out seeking work, despite the fact that we loved clubbing.
It wasn't long after I met my husband that I took a phlebotomy course which he paid for, I phased through it well but actually never worked in the arena. This was just a stepping stone to doing the right thing, as I had bigger goals, which Louis fully supported. Thereafter, I started community college, where I studied journalism and Print Media. While going through the program and after several challenges, but with his support, I became a reporter for the college newspaper, and was unanimously voted as Managing Editor a year later.
We got pregnant with our first son Key-Shawn, while I was still in the journalism program. Two weeks after I had Key-Shawn, I went back to school since it was in the midst of the semester and I was due to graduate that June. Again, Louis stepped up and took care of the baby, during the day, since he worked the evening shift. He never slept but he never complained. We later had Malachi and the process started all over again. He still never complained
A few years later when I became a full time reporter and traveled to cover my stories, he always had the kids. Again, when I went onto NYU for four years he stepped up to the plate and played his part very well. If I were to use a few words to describe my husband it would be the "The Most Incredible Human Being God Created Just For Me."
