Love for your indoor/outdoor ivy's. As everyone has stated the ivy to be the easiest house plant I must disagree. As a gardener/florist I must enlist that ivy's are pretty spoiled when it comes to what they like, where they want to be and how much water they would like to have. If you come in my home you will find over six different ivy's no more due to everyone that comes over tends to fall in love and I am a giver therefore I have no more than six at most times.
First when buying an ivy make sure she is wet and healthy, ivy's thrive with water, adding some peters 20-20-20 every three to four months will have them as green and as beautiful as imaginable. Then if your house is very cool; water well once a week. Do not over water if you are the over watering type make sure she's in a pot with holes ( it is better to have them in Terra cotta pots they keep moisture in). Have them in a well lite area but no direct sunlight (direct sunlight makes leaves pale and will eventually kill the plant). The indirect sunlight will keep them happy and the waterings will keep them green,.
As I stated above ivy's are spoiled because not everyone has the perfect indoor environment for them, if your house is too cold, they won't last, too much light will eventually kill them, they don't like to be moved around all over the house, so if you like re decorating all the time ivy's are not for you. If you don't water them enough they will dry out , if you over water them they will rot.
Crazy as this may sound; listen to your plants just by looking at them you should be able to tell if they need water, more light, fresh air. My ivy's get rain water once a month or as often as it rains, they love this fun.
I have some variegated ivy's in baskets in my outdoor garden tucked between larger bushes. Ivy's don't like exposure to direct sun light so you can use them as fillers between other plants. Personally my ivy's' are under bougainvillea's and in wicker basket where they get the moisture locked in especially during drought season, this way if we get a frost it is easier to bring in; than if planted in the ground. Plus accenting baskets in your everyday garden is a marvel (check out my decorating advice article on how to add everyday baskets and pots to your outdoor gardens).
Ivy's are fun when cared for correctly and can become an envy to your friends. You can do lots with them. Example go to your nearest hobby shop and look for heart shape wreaths ( any width , but not too large), accent
