Testimonies: Why I decided to cancel cable television

We are a society hooked on cable television. People think they have to have cable in order to survive. I come from the days when you had three channels to pick from. You also had to get off your lazy butt and change the channel with a dial no less! I think that I can survive without watching endless hours of television programs that do little to no good for my brain cells.

Believe it or not, I miss those days. Everyone wasn't stuck in front of the television. If your phone rang, you answered it and the person on the other end of the line was more important than the show you were missing. I can't tell you how many times I have called someone to be put off because they didn't want to miss their show. Usually the show is something like American Idol.

The cable bills are extremely high these days too. You can't really get around that. Even the most basic cable comes with an extremely high rate. I don't really care for most of the channels on cable. If I want to shop, hopping online or into the car to go to the store suits me just fine. If I am not watching most of them, why do I want to pay for them?

I miss the days when we had regular television shows. Leave It To Beaver, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, The Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch. Those are just a few of the shows that I have on my list of all time favorites. I am not much at all for the new wave in television programming. I don't want to watch people stab each other in the back to win a game. I don't want to Dance With The Stars. I don't care that Scott Baio is in his forties and not married.

Instead of trying to find something on the endless list of channels available on our expensive cable networks, I have opted to get a subscription to Netflix. You can order whatever shows you want to watch from there. You don't really waste your money because you get a certain amount of shows at a time. Once you send one back, they send out the next one on your list. As long as you keep the queue full, you will continually get the movies sent to you. It's great. We watch what shows we want. when we want. We aren't stuck with a high cable bill and we don't have to flip the channels endlessly.

You might be surprised how little value you get for your cable if you try something like this. There is blockbuster also. You can go straight to the store and get a replacement movie right away with them. These options are a lot cheaper than cable and you get more bang for your buck. Give it a shot!

Let's not forget the time that you spend in front of your television that could be used for quality family time. Walks with your sweetheart or a board game with your children. How about a game a ball with your dog. You might even do something productive with all that free time and clean the house or get the yard cleaned up.

Cable isn't the be all and end all of life. There is so much more to life than that. Watch your bills go down, your savings go up, your family enjoying each other and things getting done. All this just because you cancelled your cable. What could be better than that?
