You need to start with looking at what it is that you are wanting out of the group. Are you there for a social outing, are you there to train your dog for competition or are you there because if you don't your council does not give you the cheapest rate for registration.
Many towns and suburbs only have one main dog obedience arena so peoples choices are rather limited. For those that are there for a social outing, and to give there dogs a basic education this is adequate. you learn the basics and then you go home to practice for the next week.
For those whom have pedigree dogs or wish to compete, you may need to search for more advanced lessons. For group lessons, you may try contacting your local breed register, often like minded people band together to combat specific issues relating to the breed of dog they chose.
Often people will start with the council or volunteer run classes and then meet and greet others that are looking to do or whom are doing what it is that they would lie to specialize in. Within the basic classes they will often have grades, and often on a different day agility for those interested.
So you need to attend and do your research adequately. You need to understand what it is that you are searching for with your dog so you can make the best choice for the both of you to achieve your goals
